UN Standard for Transport Packaging
The UN standard for transport packaging is based on the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods and serves as a performance-based standard that evaluates the ability of packaging to protect its contents throughout the logistics lifecycle. The standard does not prescribe a specific material, structure, or manufacturing method, but instead requires proven performance through a series of mechanical and environmental tests that simulate real transportation and storage conditions.
The packaging is evaluated as a complete engineered system whose purpose is to manage mechanical energy and protect equipment during handling, loading, and multimodal transportation. During a typical shipping cycle, cargo is exposed to accidental drops, continuous vibration, stacking loads, and changing environmental conditions. Accordingly, the structural characteristics, closure methods, and internal cushioning systems of the packaging are assessed.
Drop tests evaluate the ability of the packaging to absorb sudden impact and reduce the acceleration transferred to the contents when the package strikes the ground or a rigid surface in various orientations. Load tests validate the stability of the outer structure under stacked storage conditions and verify the preservation of internal clearances over time. Vibration tests simulate prolonged transportation by truck, aircraft, or marine vessel and examine material fatigue, fastener loosening, and movement of the contents inside the package.
A key aspect of the standard is the treatment of packaging as an Energy Management System. The external shell provides structural rigidity and load distribution, while the internal cushioning systems are required to control the acceleration transmitted to the protected system and prevent functional damage even after severe transportation events. Therefore, material design, density of absorbing elements, safety clearances, and support points are integral parts of compliance with the standard.
