Fire Performance - Resistance & Combustion Behavior
For systems stored or transported in industrial, marine, or aerospace environments, packaging enclosures may be required to demonstrate controlled fire behavior and comply with safety requirements. Possible ignition sources may include electrical faults within the equipment, batteries, nearby fuel systems, or external fire events. Therefore, the reaction of the packaging material to heat and ignition is a critical engineering consideration.
Fire performance testing evaluates ignition rate, flame spread, and self-extinguishing capability after the ignition source is removed. The main engineering objective is to control thermal energy and prevent the packaging itself from accelerating a fire event or rapidly transferring heat to the protected equipment.
MAGEN packaging solutions are manufactured from structural polypropylene, and for applications requiring enhanced fire resistance, flame retardant additives can be incorporated into the raw material compound. This modifies the behavior of the material when exposed to flame: it does not support flame propagation, reduces burn rate, and demonstrates self-extinguishing characteristics after removal of the heat source, while preserving the mechanical properties required for engineered packaging.
Unlike wooden packaging, which may serve as an active combustible material, or metal enclosures that rapidly conduct heat to the contents, polypropylene enclosures with flame retardant additives provide better control over heat spread and its impact on the internal equipment. In addition, the structural profiles and welded joints create material continuity and reduce potential ignition points at mechanical interfaces.
The design of the internal cavities limits free oxygen flow inside the enclosure and contributes to reducing the intensity of a thermal event. This helps preserve protection for sensitive equipment even under abnormal scenarios throughout storage and transportation cycles.
MAGEN packaging solutions are designed in accordance with relevant fire safety requirements, and where required are manufactured from flame-retardant materials and tested for controlled fire behavior while maintaining structural integrity and equipment protection.
